The place
Built as a cycle showroom in 1897 and turned into a pool in 1912, and then more or less left alone. Iron roof trusses, tall arched windows, wooden changing cubicles along the wall, and light falling in shafts onto green water. It is two minutes from the busiest museum in the country and almost nobody in that queue knows it exists.
Before you go
Check the timetable: half the day is club training and lessons, and only the gaps are open swimming.
