The place

Dug after the war, surrounded by post-war housing blocks and a lot of grass. On a warm evening the banks fill up with families, barbecues, volleyball and teenagers on the jetties, and it looks nothing like the Amsterdam on the postcards. The sunset over the water from the eastern bank is the best free thing in the city.

Before you go

The beach lost its official bathing water status after repeated E. coli readings, so check the current water quality before you get in. Sitting on the bank is fine either way.
