The place

You take the free ferry behind Centraal, and five minutes later you are standing on the other side of the water looking back at a skyline of cranes. The old NDSM yard is all rust and concrete, and somebody put a beach in the middle of it. In summer it is packed. In November it is nearly empty and twice as good.

Before you go

The ferry runs all night and costs nothing. Time your crossing back for around sunset and stand on the deck, not inside.
