The place
The oldest zoo in the country, and the least zoo-like. It was laid out as a botanical garden with animals in it, so there are enormous plane trees, a pond, a planetarium and nineteenth century animal houses that are listed buildings. Plenty of people here have a year pass and use it the way you would use a park: an hour after work, a coffee, out again.
Before you go
Go on a weekday morning and take the long way round the back, past the pond. That half is nearly empty.
